Housekeeping is often called the "backbone of the hospitality industry." From 5-star hotels in Nairobi to luxury safari lodges in the Mara, professional housekeepers are in high demand. If you are looking to get certified in hospitality in Kenya, choosing an accredited institution like Kibondeni College ensures that your certificate is recognized by top employers nationwide.

Here is your step-by-step roadmap to getting certified in 2026.

Step 1: Choose the Right Certification Level

Kibondeni offers several certification paths depending on your previous education and career goals:

  • NITA National Skills Certificate (NSC) Level IV: A comprehensive 4-term program focusing on professional hotel operations (Housekeeping, Laundry, Food Production, and Service).

    • Requirement: KCSE Mean Grade D (Plain) to A.

  • NITA National Skills Certificate (NSC) Level III: A 3-term focused program specializing in professional housekeeping and basic culinary skills.

    • Requirement: KCPE or KCSE Mean Grade of D- (Minus).

  • NITA Grade Test: A 3-term program that builds practical skills in food production, housekeeping, laundry, and food & beverage service.

    • Requirement: KCPE or KCSE certificate

  • Housekeeping & Cookery Course (H.C.C): A 3-month practical program for women seeking fast-track hospitality skills.

    • Requirement: Open entry (No specific grade required).

Step 2: Benefit from the Dual Training System

The Dual Training System is a core pillar of our approach to technical and vocational education, ensuring that learning remains practical, relevant, and closely aligned with industry realities. By intentionally integrating classroom instruction with structured, supervised industry-based training, students gain hands-on experience alongside theoretical knowledge.

The model has evolved over time to remain responsive to the needs of industry partners, resulting in flexible formats such as weekly, block, monthly, rotational, and apprenticeship-oriented training.

This adaptability allows students to immerse themselves fully in real work environments while meeting academic outcomes and industry standards. Through continuous assessment, close supervision, and feedback from industry mentors, the Dual Training System strengthens quality assurance and keeps curricula aligned with current hospitality practices.

Students graduate with enhanced practical skills, professional confidence, and a strong work ethic, having already navigated real workplace expectations.

Early exposure to industry not only improves employability and eases the transition from college to work, but also enables students to build professional networks and gain a holistic understanding of their field.

This shared approach reflects our commitment to producing competent, industry-ready graduates who are well-equipped for sustainable careers.

Step 3: Prepare for National Examinations (NITA)

Kibondeni is a registered TVET institution. For housekeeping students, certification involves:

  • NITA National Skills Certificate (NSC): This is the primary certification for our long-term programs (Level III and IV).

  • NITA Trade Tests: For specialized housekeeping tracks, students sit for NITA Grade Tests. These are "proof-of-skill" assessments where you demonstrate world-class standards in laundry management, chemical handling, guest room set-up, and floral arrangements under the supervision of official industrial examiners.

Step 4: The Application Process

Intakes happen every January, May, and September. To apply:

  1. Submit Documents: Original and 2 copies of your KCPE/KCSE result slips and National ID/Passport.

  2. Interview: Attend a brief interview at the college (weekdays at 8:00 a.m.). There is a non-refundable interview fee of KES 500.

  3. Admission: Once verified, you will receive your admission letter to begin your journey.
